Individual
An individual is a single, distinct entity — typically a human being considered separately from a group or society.
The word comes from the Latin individuus, meaning "indivisible." Here are the main ways it's used:
As a person: Most commonly, an individual simply refers to a single human being — one person as opposed to a collective, group, or organization. For example, "the rights of the individual."
In philosophy: An individual is a particular, unique entity that exists as a discrete unit. Philosophers distinguish individuals from universals (general concepts or categories). You, for instance, are an individual; "humanity" is not.
In biology: An individual is a single organism — one member of a species, capable of independent existence.
